Succession Finale: A Recap of the Final Episode

The Beginning of Succession

Let’s take a trip down memory lane to remember how we got to the 90-minute-long episode that brought Succession to an end. Creator Jesse Armstrong had an idea back in 2018 about telling a story of failure for the most wealthy, driven, and shameless media tycoons globally, making it about their children.

Armstrong told HBO, “Great characters can be unfaithful. They can lie and cheat; the Roys do lots of bad in the world, but when we’re creating these stories, we’re empathizing with them.” Until the end, Succession was easy to emphasize with. Logan Roy, the father of the family, who passed away, always put his children in compromising positions. After his death, they had an opportunity to grow as characters, but they didn’t; they instead double-down on the terror, wanting to destroy a highly profitable business deal and become the only captains to elect a far-right president in the process.

Armstrong proved that there is no end to the abyss once you start falling down it. For five years, audiences witnessed this family cascade downward into the hole, empathizing with the family as they dug their own grave.

Series Finale Recap

The series finale commences with Kendall desperately trying to stop the GoJo deal because he lacks the votes to seal it off. After the funeral, the three children meet at their mother’s Barbados house to discuss the next course of action. They find themselves having to choose who will follow in their father’s footsteps and run the business, but the problem is, they can’t divide Logan Roy’s wealth three ways.

After an intense conversation involving hard truths and angry overlapping of words, the Roy siblings agree to choose one of them over the other. Kendall suggests that it should be him, to which Shiv mocks, “Guess who Kendall thinks it should be? It’s going to blow your fucking mind,” but she eventually agrees to vote yes, making him the CEO.

The Roy family convenes at their father’s apartment, now a property of Connor and Willa, where they auction Logan’s possessions while reminiscing about their lives. While watching a recording of Logan reciting a poem and singing songs with his associates, they realize the good moments were brief but sweet.

Shiv and Tom end up confronting each other again at Logan’s apartment, where Tom reveals he suspects he will be named the CEO. Shiv storms out, and Tom slaps Greg before finding out the news.

The episode’s climax involves a split down the line of yay or nay votes for the GoJo deal, with Shiv teed up to give the deciding “No.” However, she changes her mind, and Kendall becomes the CEO.

Overall, the finale was a fitting end to Succession, living up to the show’s themes of power, greed, and family betrayal.
